Bronze bust of Sir Henry Irving as Hamlet
We were proud to present a striking and culturally significant piece in our April 2026 sale, a bronze bust of Sir Henry Irving in his iconic role as Hamlet, sculpted by the renowned artist Onslow Ford. Measuring 33cm high by 18cm wide, the piece is both visually impressive and historically rich, bringing together theatre, art and local heritage in a single work.
Quality and provenance
Originally valued between £1,200 and £1,400, the bust attracted strong interest on the day, ultimately achieving £1,500 when the hammer fell. This result reflects both the quality of the piece and its compelling provenance, highlighting the continued demand for items that combine artistic merit with cultural and local significance.
Distinguished sculptor
Onslow Ford, a distinguished sculptor and member of the Royal Academy of Arts, was known for his expressive and finely detailed work, and this bust is no exception. It captures Sir Henry Irving, one of the most celebrated actors of the Victorian era, in his portrayal of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a role that became synonymous with his name and legacy. The sculpture reflects both the dramatic intensity of the character and the artistry of a sculptor working at the height of his craft.
Connection to Stratford-upon-Avon
What makes this piece particularly special is its connection to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and a town deeply rooted in theatrical history. The bust came to auction from the home of a local Royal Shakespeare Company actor, adding an extra layer of provenance and reinforcing its ties to the world of performance. In a town where Hamlet continues to be performed on some of the world’s most respected stages, this piece feels especially at home.
